Whole Bean vs Ground Coffee: Which Should You Buy?
By Bryce · · 4 min read

If you already own a grinder, whole beans let you grind a fresh dose for the brewer you use that day. Pre-ground coffee saves time and equipment, but you need to choose a grind suited to your brewing method before you buy it. Hugo sells whole-bean coffee only, so plan on using a grinder if you choose one of our bags.
The practical difference
Whole beans stay intact until you grind them. Ground coffee has more surface exposed to air, so its aroma and flavour can change sooner after opening. Neither format guarantees a good cup by itself: storage, the roast, the grind and your recipe all matter.
Choose whole beans if you have a grinder or are happy to get one, want to switch between brew methods, or prefer to grind only the amount you need. Choose pre-ground coffee from a seller that offers it if convenience matters more and you know which grind your brewer needs.

What kind of grinder do you need?
A grinder that lets you adjust the grind size is useful when you change brewers. You do not need to match a universal numbered setting: numbers vary by grinder. Check your brewer and grinder instructions, start with their suggested range and adjust one variable at a time. If you do not have a grinder, do not buy Hugo beans expecting a ground-coffee option at checkout.
How much should you grind?
Start with the amount you plan to brew, then adjust to taste. For filter coffee, our coffee-to-water ratio guide starts at 14 g of coffee for 250 mL of brewing water. Weighing a dose makes it easier to repeat a cup you like.

Keep the rest of the beans sealed in a cool, dry place away from heat and light. Our coffee storage guide explains the routine. Grind a little at a time rather than opening a bag and grinding everything at once.
Choose a Hugo roast
Tummy Time is our medium-dark roast; 4:40 AM is our dark roast. Both are sold as 340 g bags of whole beans. Pick the roast that sounds good to you, make sure you can grind it, and start with a simple recipe you can adjust. Compare both Hugo coffees.
