How to Store Coffee Beans at Home

By Hugo Coffee · · 4 min read

Hugo Coffee bags and a sealed coffee storage container

Store coffee beans in a tightly sealed container in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and heat. Keep them whole until you're ready to brew. These simple steps follow the National Coffee Association's storage guidance.

We like a morning routine with fewer decisions. Hugo has plenty of other plans for the day.

Choose the place before the container

Look for a cupboard away from the oven, dishwasher and direct sun. An opaque airtight container is a useful choice. If you use a clear jar, keep it inside a dark cupboard rather than beside a sunny window. The aim is to limit exposure to air, moisture, light and heat. NCA storage guidance.

Make the spot convenient enough that putting the coffee away is automatic. A container that looks good but stays open beside the grinder will not help your routine.

Give your opened bag a routine

Write the opening date somewhere you can see it. Close the container after taking out the amount you need and keep any packaging instructions with the beans. If you are keeping coffee in its original bag, check that it seals securely; an airtight container is the NCA's recommended option for opened coffee. NCA storage guidance.

The date is a reminder to pay attention to the coffee, not an invented expiry deadline. We will cover freshness and dates separately; this guide is about where and how to store your everyday beans.

Keep your next dose simple

Grind the amount you need shortly before brewing. The NCA recommends waiting to grind for fresh flavor. NCA storage guidance.

For a simple filter starting point, our FAQ suggests 14 g of coffee for 250 mL of water. A 340 g bag contains about 24 of those doses, or around 12 doses at 28 g each. Use your own dose and daily habit to decide how much coffee to order.

Should coffee go in the fridge or freezer

For your everyday bag, a cupboard keeps the routine straightforward. Refrigeration and freezing introduce moisture considerations; truly airtight packaging matters if you choose either. Follow packaging instructions and consult the NCA's freezing guidance before storing a reserve bag cold.

You do not need a freezer experiment to get started. Pick a sensible spot, seal the coffee after use, and keep track of what you enjoy drinking.

A good place for your next good morning

Tummy Time and 4:40 AM both arrive as 340 g bags of whole-bean coffee. Tummy Time is medium-dark; 4:40 AM is dark. Choose the roast you enjoy, bring your own grinder, and give the bag a home in the cupboard.
